Registration for the 2011 Electronics and Sustainability Symposium is open!
The Sustainable Electronics Initiative (SEI) and Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) are hosting the Second Annual Electronics and Sustainability Symposium at the I-Hotel and Conference Center, in Champaign, Illinois, on March 23-24, 2011. This event will serve as a forum for welcoming new ideas and alternative methods for dealing with the environmental impacts of electronic devices. It will also serve as an opportunity to interact with representatives from academia, industry, and government sectors.
Americans currently own nearly 3 billion electronic products, which quickly become obsolete and are replaced at alarming rates. About two-thirds of cast-off devices still work, but only 15% are recycled. The remaining 85% are potentially a significant waste of energy and materials, possibly posing serious environmental and health risks.
Given the complexity, uncertainty, and diversity of the e-waste problem, a rigorous, multidisciplinary academic approach is necessary to develop and implement systems that effectively utilize and recycle these products. The Electronics and Sustainability: Design for Energy and the Environment Symposium is aimed at addressing current challenges and ways to improve the current processes, designs, and applicable legislations.
John Pflueger, Principal Environmental Strategist at Dell, will be the keynote speaker during the symposium. Additional speakers include:
- William Hoffman, UL Environment
- Andrew Steckl, University of Cincinnati
- Charles Newman, ReCellular
- Courtney Rushforth, City of Urbana
- Bill Olson, Motorola
- Manish Mehta, National Center for Manufacturing Sciences
- Alex Lobos and Callie Babbitt, Rochester Institute of Technology
Registration for the event is $200 for both days, or $125 per day. The price includes continental breakfast, coffee, and lunch. In addition, symposium attendees have an opportunity to visit the National Center for Supercomputing Applications on the University of Illinois campus on March 22, 2011.

We hope you will be able to join us for this exciting event!
