E-Waste Collection in C-U
Champaign County held another successful e-waste collection event! Residents from Champaign, Urbana, Savoy and surrounding areas brought in their waste electronics. On August 7, approximately 1,200 vehicles came through the line and discarded an estimated 225,000-250,000 of electronics! The event was sponsored by Vintage Tech Recyclers, City of Champaign, City of Urbana, Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, Champaign County, News-Gazette, Village of Savoy, the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center and the University of Illinois College of Fine and Applied Arts.
New E-Waste Law Taking Effect
Wisconsin's 2009 Senate Bill 107 was signed in October of 2009. Since January 1, electronics manufacturers have been registering with the state, in order to keep their selling rights with the state. As of Sept. 1, 2010, Wisconsin residents will no longer be able to dispose of their electronics in municipal garbage. Furthermore, the recycling will be free for Wisconsin residents, as manufacturers are responsible for payment of recycling the goods. Accepted electronic components include computers, printers, televisions, monitors, computer peripherals, fax machines, DVD players and VCRs, as well as cell phones.
